Well, today I received my dose of autism early in the morning. Carter fell asleep early last night wearing a black, long-sleeved shirt. When I tried to get him dressed this morning he threw a major, I repeat, major fit. I had a pair of black shorts and a red short sleeved shirt picked out for him. He had other plans. The short sales, socks, and shoes went out without any issues. When I started to changed he shirt he flipped out on me. I tried to explain to Carter that he had to put on a new shirt if he wanted to go have breakfast at his favorite place-PJ’s Coffee. I don’t even know if he heard me through all his screaming. He doesn’t understand reasoning anyway but I still try.
After I finally forced the long sleeved shirt off of him and put on the red one he was screaming bloody murder. I mean, really? All over a shirt. Just as my patience was wearing thin a light-bulb went off. I grabbed a black short-sleeved shirt from Carter’s room and asked him if he wanted to wear it. I figured since it was black that I could just trick him into forgetting about this whole tantrum. Well, for a second it seemed like it was working. Until he started trying to pull down the sleeves to make them longer. I asked him if he wanted to wear his jacket in an effort to distract him. It worked. The only problem was that he wore that jacket for the rest of the day. And it wasn’t exactly cold.
The rest of the day Carter did fine. Usually a bad start would most likely mean a bad day. Not this time. He’s getting better. As you can see, it’s all about patience and a bit if compromise.
